March 21, World Down Syndrome Day 2024: Let’s End Stereotypes!
Since 2011, this day serves to remind us how people with Down syndrome still face stereotypes that view them as “objects of charity,” eternal children, incapable of doing anything independently. This is undoubtedly an outdated and, above all, demeaning mindset. In today’s reality, people with Down syndrome are aware of their own affairs and, with the right support, advocate for their own right to be included in all areas of society, to have real jobs, to access education without barriers, to decide where, how, and with whom to live, also within the perspective of “During Us, After Us”, to have a Quality Life.
ANffAS Nazionale and we at ANffAS Parma believe that inclusion and equal rights and opportunities should soon become concrete and daily realities in our society, finally overcoming stereotypes.
